Success: Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency to review all Enalapril Maleate Package Information Leaflets

By Dr Helen Bright

Every medicine pack includes leaflet (PIL), which provides information on using medicines safely.

PIL needs to be read several times, but even after doing that some will be puzzled.

In the course of investigations into the case of Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba I discovered that PILs varied in different countries and that it would be difficult for patients and carers to understand what action they need to take at times when it really matters.

For example, it would be difficult to know exactly what is meant by severe diarrhoea and bad vomiting. It would be both offputting and nearly impossible to measure such fluid loss outside hospital environment even if precise definition was there. The context of diarrhoea and vomiting such as in sepsis can define prognosis further.

It is best to consult with doctor at once regarding further administration of medication if there is vomiting or diarrhoea while taking Enalapril Maleate. This could save lives.

Following communication of disparities in PILs Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency will review all PILs for Enalapril Maleate in UK.
