Virginia Jibowu. Kings College London Under Fire

Multiple concerns about Kings College London Medical School have been raised. The General Medical Council and every other authority have refused to investigate the evidence presented. The social experiment and EMDP should be banned by the General Medical Council. Those of us who are aware of the lax attitude of the GMC will be aware that the GMC never acts unless it has to. Kings College London Medical School appears to be institutionally racist yet everyone has turned a blind eye to the legitimate and evidence based concerns raised by Virginia Jibowu.

The authorities turn a blind eye because the EMDP was introduced following representations by ill informed black students who were keen to bring in more black students into medicine in a blatently racist university. The lesson to be learnt is that appeasing the racists does not work. What was needed was a demand for fair recruitment not a special programme for blacks.

I believe ethnic minorities overall welcome additional support they get and these opportunities shouldnt be lost because of one individuals claims which has minimal evidence behind it. I cant help but feel that this wouldnt have caused any concern if it wasn't for an individual failing multiple exams and therefore not being awarded her degree. On behalf of some the African- Caribbean communities of London I apologise for any false/ not yet proven allegations that have circled the internet and caused emotional/psychological damage to the individuals mentioned.

Anonymous 5 November, ethnic minorities are not retarded and are not in need of additional support. What black students need is fair recruitment and training by KCL. You do not need to apoligise on behalf of the ethnic minorities as the majority of black people in the UK can empathise with Virginia Jibowu hence her petition has over 500 signatures. If you have some grudge against Virginia which is obvious from your statement, keep it as your grudge but do not claim to represent a community that isd obviously alien to you.

Good luck Virginia,
anonymous Nov 5th 'On behalf of some the African- Caribbean communities of London' are you for real, for goodness sake, The EMDP insults the people it claims to help, and where exactly does it state it is okay to perform race and intelligence tests, thanks to Professor Eysenck without 'informed consent'
Can you explain to me what is 'Competitive Marking?

The comment on 5th Nov 'On behalf of some the African- Caribbean communities of London I apologise' is one of the most obviously loaded and derogatory statements I've ever seen posted on a forum. He/she takes it upon themself to apologise on behalf of hundreds of thousands of people, if not more - One word - Troll.

The anonymous contributor of 5 November 2010 @ 7.46 should read the talk by Dr Aneez Esmail http://www.sochealth.co.uk/news/raceaneez.htm
and the research he carried out with Dr Sam Everington in the BMJ. In short what they found is that ethnic minority doctors will find it 3 times harder to get a post as their equally qualified white colleagues.

In my honest opinion this is absolute nonsense. I know plenty of students studying medicine at Kings College ethnic and otherwise. Many of these students have gone on to become doctors so I don't see how just one student was racially attacked and this has prevented her obtaining a medical degree. As for the £5 million in damages. I think this just illustrates that Virginia is not able to accept that she has failed a few exams/assessments and consequentially the degree(as would any other student ethnic or not), so she is using the 'racism card' to claim money that is not rightfully hers!

Having lived something similar and still suffering the consequences ..., I would have advised her ... to keep her head down ...

I would have thought that after 6 years in a place like KCL, Virginia would have known all about keeping her head down. I am sure she complied to succeed. There is a limit to keeping ones head down. When you are left disabled perhaps that is the limit? Racism should not be tolerated and only continues because of the keep your head down culture.

I am not sure that racism ONLY continues because of the culture of keeping one's head down.
In my experience, there is a high cost taking on powerful institution.

Virginia got well below the required A-level grades for entry onto medicine, so without the EMDP she would never have been given a chance to study medicine in the first place?! King's are trying to help people let them do six years of study and then decide they want them out!

anonymous may18, u r sooo ill-informed, virginia had the grades capable of competing with those of the 5 yr course, but of cos, shes black, working class AND applied into the emdp and got accepted! i also got 4 As and got rejected from the 5 yr course, i didnt want to do the 6 yera 'special' course.....well my pride took me somewhere here, i am abroad studying medicine and this situation makes me think i made the right decision..

@28 June

Please read the court records where all the information is available. The minimum A-level requirement was ABB at KCL that year, Virginia obtained ACC grades - well below the minimum grades required. Also in the court records are her repeated applications to be moved to the 5-year course once at Uni - despite not meeting the minimum academic criteria. When these requests were rightfully refused she maintains this was racially motivated. Notice how she didn't get offers from any other Universities - are they racist too?

The opening sequence in this YouTube video is untrue and while I would like to have sympathy for Virginia she clearly comes across as someone with a delusional sense of entitlement and a limited grasp of the truth. Also the way this campaign has been conducted with unfounded allegations plastered across the internet, some of which involved former friends, speaks volumes about her character and those of her supporters.

Rita Pal on WhistleBlowing

Stop. Think. Do you really need to do this, or can you resolve the situation another way? If not, if a whistleblower you are determined to be, plan ahead. Gather your evidence in the form of documents, tape recordings, photographs etc, before you shoot your mouth off, because you will be amazed how much will change or vanish altogether the minute you say anything. Be sure of your legal position; research is key, and you MUST take the trouble to read important documents instead of hoping your lawyers will do it for you. Learn how to obtain documents using the Data Protection Act, and don’t be afraid to do so it is your right, after all. Always have a contingency plan, because sooner or later something will go wrong. Be prepared for a 10 year battle to extract information to vindicate you. And finally your not paranoid, they really are out to get you, so don’t let the buggers get you down!! Good luck!

The NHS is full of racists from Secretaries to Management To senior Management to Doctors to Senior Doctors to Medical Directorate to Directorate Managers.

I have experienced racism from all of them in the NHS in London.

Human Resources, management etc will LIE and exaggerate so you know.

Somewhat similar to the Krittika Biswas case, since both started due to some kind of institutionalized racial animus; of course the former being a criminal lawsuit and the latter being civil. The difference: in the end, Krittika won her case when she sued NYC and the school board for malicious prosecution, and Virginia lost. The reasoning is simple, the civil rights movement that happened in North America never happened in Europe, no wonder racism is still condoned and commonplace.
